Golden Chicken Fern 金毛狗 Cibotium barometz
Also known as woolly fern it can grow up to one metre in height. It is a tree fern that can form extensive colonies on disturbed woodland slopes. Its rhizome (as it is woolly) is thought to have given rise to the mythical 'vegetable lamb of tartary' (ref.), which was something reminiscent of the screaming mandrake root which also has its root in medieval belief.
